NIS has a strong awareness of and ensure our interventions do no harm to the environment, and several NIS programmes specifically include interventions promoting renewable energy to foster environmental resilience. From the very beginning, NIS has integrated green energy into the projects, starting with the very first solar street light intervention in the main street of Mogadishu. Since then, the Foundation has installed thousands of solar streetlights in Somalia and Mali and developed solar systems providing electricity to hospitals and markets, in turn lowering the overall carbon emissions. Other interventions include projects aimed at mitigating the effects of flooding, which has been made worse and more frequent by climate change.

In 2022, NIS started implementing it’s very first project in Norway, called Hva nå? Endringslaben. By highlighting concrete examples of how our everyday lives in Norway are linked to global and local climate and sustainability challenges and solutions, the Hva nå? project aims to make the concept of sustainability easier to relate to for kids and youth. The project is made up of a travelling, interactive exhibition which is set up in libraries across the country. Local school classes are invited to visit the exhibition and also work with the sustainability topic both before and after the visit by completing in-class learning activities specifically designed for the exhibition. Visit the Hva Nå? Endringslaben website for more information.
